What is USMLE and should you go for it?

USMLE  is an exam which is given by US medical students to clear their medical school and apply for Residency in a particular field. Thus, as Foreign medical graduates (i.e non-US citizen that have completed their medical school from country outside USA) you are needed to clear USMLE to be at the same scale for residency positions.
USMLE is a 3 step examination – Step 1, Step 2 CS, step 2 CK all of which needs to be cleared to gain ECFMG certification to be valid in your residency application.

Thus, by when you should be clearing these steps is equally as important. All the USMLE steps need to be complete with results in hand before September residency applying. I will write more about how you should time your exams in the coming posts. In this post I will restrict to giving a general view about the USMLE.

The decision to go for USMLE or not is very simple that is made very complicated. If you want to stay and practice in USA for at least the next 10 years then please continue without doubting about anything regarding money etc.You will always find a way if you have will.

But if you still have doubts about it then I will suggest to give yourself time and think about it. I will write more on this in the coming posts and hopefully that will help you in making a decision.

  1. I am final yr mbbs student and ready to go all in for usmle…..but what if i dont get residency…what are the other options?
Where to do electives and how much does it cost?

    1. Dear Sarang,
The ‘What If’ question will arise in all decisions of life even if you opt for Indian PG entrance . First decide if USMLE is your path by gaining more knowledge and practical experience of US healthcare system. Every elective has different cost the information of which can be found on particular college website. Best luck !
