My answer to How does the LOR help IMGs get residency in the US via USMLE?
Answer by Sia Kumar:
The system in USA is slightly different than in India.
As in India , you clear an entrance exam- get a score and rank, based on these get a PG seat according to your preference and availability of seat.
In USA, however its like applying for a training job position. So you need to built a good CV /Resume that tells the hospital that you are the perfect candidate for them.
This CV building includes good USMLE scores along with good LOR ,good medical school scores/honors, any article publications or posters, research associations, work experience. LORs are preferred of order USA LOR > Home country LOR, but one of the two has to be there.
For each hospital residency application of a specialty you need to provide 3 LORs along with your residency application.
LOR is said to be good if:
- USA LOR> any other country LOR.
- LOR writter’s rank in the medical system is high and his extend of association with your clinical skills is close monitoring & long.
- LOR by doctor for work in the applied specialty branch > doctor for work in other branches. This means if you apply for IM and give Psychiatry LOR even though its a USA LOR , it reflects poorly most of times on your decisive ability.
